If you’re playing music in your business—whether in a café, retail shop, hotel, or gym—you’re legally required to obtain music licenses. In Malaysia, that typically means securing approvals from three key Collective Management Organizations (CMOs):

  • MACP – represents composers and lyricists
  • PPM – represents record labels
  • RPM – represents performers like vocalists and musicians

Each of these CMOs charges annual licensing fees based on multiple factors, including your venue type, floor area, music usage, and number of outlets

What Are the Common Licensing Criteria?

Independent Management Entities (IMEs)

Independent Management Entities (IMEs) – For-profit companies that manage rights on behalf of individual or multiple rights holders. They offer flexible licensing arrangements, including royalty-free music services for businesses.

Collective Management Organizations (CMOs)

Non-profit entities that represent their members, such as composers, performers, and producers. They are authorised to license music use and collect royalties on behalf of their members.

In Malaysia, examples include MACP, PPM, and RPM.
